Family Magic · For the Birthday Kid

The birthday
they'll remember.

The birthday-child floats three feet in the air. Everybody helps with the tricks. The parents laugh as hard as the kids. Twenty-five years of birthday parties in Kansas City, and the reason so many families book Scott for a second child, and a third.

I · The Show

Age-appropriate,
always.

A five-year-old's birthday is not a ten-year-old's birthday, and neither is a sixteen-year-old's. Scott's birthday shows are tailored by age: slower and sillier for the little ones, faster and more impossible for older kids. For teens, essentially the same material that works for adult corporate audiences, G-rated.

Every show builds toward the birthday child being the star. They're the one who helps with the signature tricks. They're the one the arm chopper "accidentally" picks. In the Gold and Platinum packages, they're the one who actually floats three feet in the air in front of every friend at the party.

Parents tell Scott the same thing, often in follow-up emails: the kids talked about it for weeks, and the adults had as much fun as the kids did. That's the goal. The show is the centerpiece, not a sideshow that ends when the cake arrives.

III · Questions

The usual
asks.

How much space do you need?

Most living rooms or finished basements work fine. A cleared area about eight feet by eight feet is ideal. For the levitation illusion in the Gold and Platinum packages, a bit more ceiling height helps, but Scott has performed this in standard home rooms for over twenty years.

What ages does the show work for?

Ages four through adult, with the material selected specifically for the birthday child's age group. A five-year-old's show is all color, appearing-disappearing, and silly. A ten-year-old's show has real card magic and mind-reading. A teenage or adult birthday looks a lot like a corporate show: same impossible material, minus the office references.

How long does the show run? And how long is the setup?

Silver is 30 minutes of show; Gold and Platinum are 45 minutes. Setup takes about 20–25 minutes before, and cleanup is quick. Scott arrives early enough that you aren't watching the clock.

Is the show fun for the parents too?

Yes. Parents often ask Scott afterward how he did a particular trick, the same trick their six-year-old just watched happen three feet in front of them. The material is written to work on both audiences at once, which is why so many parents book Scott a second time for a sibling's birthday.

Do you do adult birthday parties?

Often. Adult birthday parties are quoted individually, usually closer to a corporate show in format, sometimes with strolling close-up magic during the earlier part of the evening. Contact Scott with the details and he'll propose a format.

Can I add balloons or additional entertainment?

Balloon add-ons are available. Scott can recommend other trusted Kansas City entertainers (face painters, etc.) if you want to pair services for a larger party.

How far in advance should I book?

Four to six weeks out is ideal for weekend bookings. Weekdays and short-notice requests are often workable; always worth asking.
